On 29 June, the Austrian Alps will once again provide the backdrop for one of Europe’s most iconic middle-distance triathlons: Challenge Kaiserwinkl-Walchsee. With nearly 50 professional athletes confirmed, the 2025 edition promises world-class racing in the heart of Tyrol.
In the women’s race, Laura Jansen (GER) returns to Walchsee after racing here in 2021. Local favourite Therese Feuersinger (AUT) is also back after a mechanical DNF last year. With a 2nd place at Challenge Sanremo and strong short-course credentials, she’s ready for redemption on home soil. Joining them is Milan Agnew (AUS), who has proven herself on the middle-distance scene with a win at Challenge Turku last year and a top-15 finish at The Championship. French athlete Julie Iemmolo, fresh off a 2nd-place finish at Challenge Cesenatico and racing back-to-back after Challenge Gdańsk, will also be one to watch. With more names to be announced, the women’s field is as exciting as it is competitive.
The men’s start list is led by Jonathan Brownlee (GBR), Olympic medalist and recent runner-up at Challenge Mogán-Gran Canaria. Austrian Olympian Tjebbe Kaindl is set for his middle-distance debut in front of a home crowd. With a background in short-course racing and multiple World Triathlon Series appearances, Kaindl will be a local favourite to follow. Also racing is Kurt McDonald (AUS), who placed 7th at The Championship and will be lining up for his sixth race of the season, showcasing both endurance and consistency. Fellow Austrian Rafael Lukats brings solid form into the race, after a 4th-place finish at Challenge St. Pölten and 6th at Walchsee last year — he’ll no doubt be aiming for the podium.
Challenge Kaiserwinkl-Walchsee is set against one of Europe’s most breathtaking landscapes, features a 1.9 km swim in Lake Walchsee, a challenging 90 km bike through the Tyrolean Alps, and a picturesque 21.1 km run around the lake. With family events, side races, and a vibrant local culture, the weekend promises unforgettable moments for both athletes and spectators.
