We asked pro german triathlete Frederic Funk, three-time winner of Challenge Kaiserwinkl-Walchsee

Why is it your favourite race course?
Challenge Kaiserwinkl-Walchsee is my favourite course because it is my home race. I grew up just 15 kilometers away, so racing here always brings back great memories. The stunning mountain backdrop and the support of local fans make it incredibly special. Plus, the course itself is challenging and rewarding, which suits my strengths as a triathlete.

What’s your favourite part of this race?
My favourite part of the race is definitely the bike course. It’s demanding, with some steep climbs and technical descents, but that’s what makes it so exciting. I also love the run around the lake—it’s hilly and tough, but the atmosphere with the spectators and volunteers cheering you on is unbeatable.

What do you recommend for first-timers?
For first-timers, I’d say focus on pacing yourself. The swim and first bike lap might feel manageable, but the second bike lap is a real test. Practice your technical bike skills, as the course requires sharp handling in places, especially on the descents. And most importantly, take in the beauty of the surroundings—it’s one of the most scenic races you’ll ever do.

When will we see you in Walchsee next?
I’ve had amazing success at Challenge Kaiserwinkl-Walchsee, and it’s a race that means so much to me. While I can’t say for sure when I’ll be back next, you can count on seeing me there again. It’s a course and an event I’ll always want to return to!

Did you have any specific sessions before the race that you believe contributed to your victory?
Not necessarily a specific session but doing a lot of training on the actual race course and learning all the climbs, descents & turns really well which can make a huge difference on race day and also gives you a lot of confidence.
